New Years Eve VINTAGE GLAM tips!

One of the best things about being a female is not having any particular reason to look your best. We don't need to have an excuse to get creative with our makeup. We don't need permission to wear a particular dress. And we certainly to need anyone's approval to look glamorous!

However, New Years Eve is a perfect reason to have fun with your look and be creative by adding a vintage flair.

Long live the days where wearing your staple LBD (little black dress) will suffice. NO! You must be daring and more adventurous then ever!

With that in mind, I came up with a creative twist on the whole New Years Eve look. I'm tired of relying on classics or staples. After all, the new year means a whole new you, so why not dress that way?

Here are some tips on being creative this New Years Eve:
  • Forget about wearing a little black dress. This year is all about color. Consider wearing jewel tones, like this pretty teal dress by MadCapClothing

  • Don't forget about accessories! Relying on glitzy, over-the-top necklaces and diamond encrusted bracelets, although pretty, is a lazy way of accessorizing. Instead minimalistic, edgy pieces will add a vintage-y touch to any ensemble. Try these ideas from ImYourPresent and jacarandadesigns for inspiration on your own look.

  • Perfect your face with pretty makeup. Both of these shops know just what it takes to complete any nighttime look.
Experiment with different colors on your eyes to create a new, one-of-a-kind smokey eye

Pair with the perfect shade of deep burgandy to up your vixen factor!

  • If you are already set on your look for ringing in the New Year, adding interesting elements is sure to make you stand out from the rest

Swedish Walnuts...as promised

So, I like to ramble on, usually about random things on my Twitter account: #vintagefixstore. Nothing wrong with that right? The way I see it is, I really enjoy reading other people's ramdom tweets about their everyday musings, and so, I should be doing my part to.

Today, I did my best to share how delicious these Swedish Walnuts were, that a coworker of mine had made, and I really couldn't do them any justice, except to say that I think I want to move to Sweden. There's only so much one can say in 140 characters, after all.

In order to share all good things in my life (okay, carefully edited things), I wanted to share this recipe with you guys. I think just reading the recipe should make some of your mouths start to water. Oh and please share this with others, as we are just around the corner from Christmas, and they would make a great treat to bring or serve at any party or get-together you may partake in. Enjoy!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Swedish Walnuts:

Melt one stick of butter or margarine and melt in a 9x13 in. pan.
Beat 2 egg whites. Add 1(one) cup of sugar and a pinch of salt. Beat for 2 or 3 minutes. With a spoon, stir in 5 cups of walnuts until well-coated.
Spread nut mixture on top of melted margarine.
Sprinkle cinnamon over nuts.
Bake at 325 for 45-55 minutes, stirring every ten minutes.
Feel free to add more cinnamon the first couple of times your stir.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Easy right? Even for all of you who thought it would be some complicated thing. Silly you! I would never hand out something difficult like that.

Advice.

So, wow another month has gone by! Isn't it crazy how we always say were busy, but what are we so busy doing? It's one of theose comments that you say to get yourself off the hook, but are you really THAT busy, or does it make you feel better about yourself to tell other people how busy you are? So I'm not even going to go there.

[Something to think about, maybe even meditate on.....]

Actually, the real reason I dropped by this morning is to share a great piece of advice my boyfriend of five and a half years just shared with me. I'm not sure if I should give a background story on this, so let me just share the advice first and if I need to elaborate more, I will.

He said that he just had a conversation with an old man around the age of 100. And of course, I don't know about you guys, but when we ( I'm talking about my bf and I ) meet someone of that age, we can't help but wonder what the secret is to living that long? What did they discover along the road of life that led them to where they are today? We're both very philosophical, I know.

The old man said, " You have to be able to laugh most things off " - hmmmm...think about that for a second.

To me that means that my lovely neighbor who keeps whistling at me everytime I come out of my house, and when I kindly ask him to stop, refuses, I should be able to laugh it off instead of seriously contemplating what will do to his house, car, etc.

To me it means when I get stuck in a traffic jam on my way to some very important place, I need to just laugh it off, preferably right by the window of the cars right next to you, so they can wonder to themselves about what in the world is so dang funny!

To me it means when I make a comment about what my bf is doing with his life and get a smart ass remark or eye rolling from certain unnamed members of my family, I should laugh about how narrowminded and ignorant they are, instead of letting make my blood boil!

What does this piece of advice mean for you?

It started with a purse

Despite all that is going on in this crazy economy, there has been one amazingly good thing that has come from the ruins - ESTATE SALES. WOOT!

So I started outside of one amazing house located amongst the beautiful orange groves we have out here, trying to look in every little nook and cranny (because that's how I roll) and came across an amazing selection of clutches. And I'm talking about the kind that have the prettiest of details. The first one I'm in love with has a lovely little clasp that's too pretty to put into words, so I'm going to to just show you.

So....awesome right?
And you simply can't beat the pretty color. It's subtly sheen in a light gold, absolutely perfect for a night out with the girls, or your man. Doesn't matter. Either way, you're going to rock it.

***

Okay, so this next one, looks really simple on the outside. It's a soft creamy, white, and to be honest, I didn't even think to open it up until I got home. (actually my roomate opened it up) and I was happily surprised

So, not only does this have a cute coin purse inside, but another pouch attached with a small gold chain. Perfect.
***

Then there's this pink clutch with chain. Enough said

***

So, here I am, thinking that I have already found some amazing little clutches, and my morning is turning into a successful one, but my stars must have all been aligned on this particular morning, because at another amazing Victorian house in our lovely little Redlands town, I found this gorgeous doctor's bag just waiting to be claimed. And it's made by the one and only American Tourister!

You don't have to be a tourist to appreciate this amazing bag!

Stay tuned at Vintage Fix!

What does independence mean to you?

So, lately I've been doing alot of thinking....crazy I know. I've been out of school for a little over a year now, I'm surprised I still have some brain cells floating around in there.

All jokes aside though, what does it mean for people to celebrate indepedence?

Many people, especially here in the States looooove B-B-Qs with close friends and family while they share stories over burgers, hot dogs, and beer, Or at least, that's what always happens at my celebrations......

drumroll please......[And speaking about celebrations, this wonderful holiday couldn't be more fitting for me in my life as I just moved into my first place with a close friend of mine, and I am officially a free woman! Woohooo!]

Anywho, my independence means:

No more putting away dishes until I'm good and ready to do so.
Walking around in my undies.
Eating and drinking what I want.
Waking up to the sound of my own thoughts instead of other people trying to wake me.
Singing (very loudly) in the shower just becasue I can.
Reminiscing with my roomate about random things over coffee. or tea. or beer.
Spur of the moment trips.

You get the idea.

Ps. pics will be coming soon. I'm very excited to show off my new place!

Current obsession

So, lately my eye has been fixated on something. And by something I mean many things. Bracelets, cuffs, adornments for your arm, I don't care what you may call them- I simply call them an obsession. And a good one at that. Most are gorgeous leather straps with intricate detail, a few with a little more sparkle, and some pretty darn basic ones. But each one I fell madly in love with, and am seriously contemplatingpurchasing these little beauties before paying rent. Seriously. Enjoy!

{P.S. I'd really love to know what the tattoo means...hint hint no. 8 amazing seller of Etsy.}

Mother's Day Shananigans

Hey friends!

How was everyone's mother's day? Although, I am not a mother yet, I love the idea behind mother's day. A day when we show our love to the women who birthed us, fed us, wiped us, watched us, bathed us, cleaned us, taxi-d us, took care of us even when they didn't want to, and most importantly loved us!

Go moms!

{Here's what I did:}

I custom made my mom a tank top using a wonderful little website called http://www.zazzle.com/. It may seem corny, but it came out oh so cute! The shirt actually was bound to happen as it started out of a joke, and our little bichon Charles (whom were so freaking crazy about, it's sick!) at the center of it (as he usually is) and my younger sister and I always said we wanted to make shirts of it, so I thought, what the heck, "Now's as good a time as any!"

Here's the background: One night my mom and I were thinking of new decorations we could put on top of her kitchen cupbourds since she has about 2 feet of space to her ceiling. I made a comment about how there are those large word decorations that say "family" and "love" and wouldn't it be funny if we had one that said "Charles" and another one that said " Number 1" and people would come over and say, "Oh, is Charles your husband?' and we would very matter of factly say, "No, Charles is our dog," - Okay, maybe it was one of those you had to be there moments, but we laughed for about 15 minutes! And it's been an inside joke (well, not anymore) ever since!

For some reasaon, since I'm having a hard time getting pics up, and my stubbornness wont allow me to wait any longer before putting it up, here's the link.

Anywho, what did you guys do for your mothers?

P.S. She loved it!

Crazy week!

Wow, you guys, have I had the craziest rollercoaster of a week!

[Can I just comment on how nice it is to reflect on this week right now to the sounds of birds and a cool breeze coming from outside. Awesome.]

I literally had a ton of things going on this past week. Instead of boring you with all the details, I wanted to list them- because I love making lists! Yay for lists!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*Saturday, April, 24th: My bf and I got his and hers scooters! Woot!

*Sunday, April 25th: I fell off my shiny red scooter after leaving church to a series of unfortunate circumstances. Ouch! Felt that one right on my tailbone.

*Monday-Wednesday: Accepted a substitute job at a childcare center for infants. Been a long timne since I have changed diapers! Worked full time. Boy was I tired.

*Wednesday, April 28th: Got sick. poop.

*Friday, April 30th: Went miniature golfing and lost.

Saturday, May 1st: Dyed my hair and only my roots took to the color. Yes, it looks like crap.
- went to a wedding - hair still looked like crap.

Sunday, May 2nd: Went to the bf's for a birthday party, and he gave me my very own biker leather jacket. Now I reeaallly feel cool on my scooter!

Today: Lazy day filled with taking of pictures and listing a new item here

The end.

Hot Studs!

Hey guys! Happy Friday! I just wanted to end this workweek with a lovely array of handsome men for you to fiest your eyes on. JK. But don't tell me that didn't cross your mind when I had the word stud in my post title!

No, instead I've been spending some time looking through Etsy (not that surprising) and I came across a really adorable pair of stud earrings by AnnaRubyKing. Now, if you guys haven't seen her work or heard of her, check her out because her attention to detail and color will blow you away. No, literally.

More importantly though, Annarubyking inspired me to create a collage, among the many I already have under my belt, of different types and styles of stud earrings. Each one of these babies was specifically hand-picked for a reason, mainly being that they were so darn cute, but also, something I would definitely wear. And they are so spring-y! Love it!

Let me know what you think!

Okay, I'm really digging this video and song right now...Random. For your listening pleasure.

Happy Friday!

Hey guys! Hope you had a great week.

I know mine was a little tough, as I have been desperately looking for a new job. The subbing thing really took a toll on me last week and it took everything in me to sub for a friend of my mine and my mom's today. I've pretty much deterimned that I need to find something that really makes me happy and doesn't require stress and anxiety. Is that too much to ask people?

But enough about me! I am excited because one of my long time friends since middle school ( about 10 years) is having a baby shower for her first little bundle of joy on Sunday. So this weekend should be nice and enjoyable.

What do you guys have going on this weekend?

The jewelry, apron, and art were found by typing in "April showers" Okay so I had a couple of spots left over and added in two new items of my own that will be up shortly on Vintage Fix -the heels and the fruit bowls :) Yay!

BitterSweet.

Here I am again....jobless. No, I'm not unemployed, I'm just without a job today. Actually, I've been without a job all week. You see as a substitute teacher, I love having the OPTION of deciding whether or not I feel like going to work. If I wake up in the morning not feeling like going, I don't have to- and it's great!

I also love having the OPTION of not going back to a school that I didn't feel very welcomed at, which, as sad as it is, DOES HAPPEN. You see, we substitutes aren't treated like real teachers. But when I'm standing up there in front of a class explaining to them what cross multiplication is and I turn around, only to find empty stares back at me, and I'm searching for relatable skills to help me get through to those kids, I feel like I'm a teacher. And why shouldn't I?

So no work this week for me so far. It really is bittersweet though. I want to work. I do. But the whole not getting paid anything that day for not working is what gets to me. And it makes it kinda difficult when my adorable, handsome, and fun boyfriend wants to hang out with me and tells me how much he misses me.

Do you see where my dilemma is?

So my plan is:
  1. Get my hair done
  2. See the boyfriend
  3. Work on a necklace I have in my mind
Ah, who am I kidding? No. 3 is pushing it, but it was worth the try.

Know what today is?

Just in case your not aware of random holidays here in the United States, I wanted to take a moment to fill you in.....Its National Pancake day! Well, according to the news it is...funny, they also said it was National Dog Biscuit Day too, but for some reason sharing a great "pancake" recipe seems like a better idea than giving you a dog biscuit recipe, no?

If you, like most other people started off the year by saying that you were going to be eating healthier, than fear not! This recipe is fabulous and the word pancake had quotations around it for a reason! Think of it more like a crepe - is your mouth watering yet?

So here it is (shamelessly taken out of the Health magazine) with some alterations of my own, of course:

The Healthy "Pancake"

You will need:

-2 egg whites
-1 egg
-1/2 tsp. of pure vanilla extract
-1 Tbsp. of sugar (or whichever sweetner you prefer, honey works great!)
-fruit to go with it (I like strawberries and nectarines)

{Whip them up with a whisk, pour em' into a large non-stick skillet heated med-high, and let those eggs cook, flip over, and you have yourself a happy little breakfast, and full tummy!}

Enjoy!

p.s. IHOP is giving away a free short stack of pancakes today, but is gladly accepting donations!

Today is going to be a good day!

Awesome Eighties!

So I was channeling Kelly Kaposky from Saved by the Bell......

Clearly very excited that I still had my old-school fanny-pack! I knew I saved it for a reason! And just so you know, it was the talk of the whole party.

me and the boyfriend....
Me and my future in-laws...I love them!

When we left the party, me and the boyfriend's sister wanted to still show off our attire so we decided to go to a new bar/restaurant in the area. We hadn't even walked in the door and we were already being hit on! Crazy! I thought for sure we'd be getting dirty looks from everyone, but as it turns out, it was only from the women....figures. All the men seemed to love it. Got to love that......

2.15.2010

I'm a work in progress...

Lately, I have been through a little dillema, to say the least....And feel this post will help me to feel better about the whole thing. If you haven't lived through a fight with a family member and it hasn't affected you emotionally, you should not read on. I only wanted to talk about this to, in some way, reach out to others who have gone through something similar, and let them know that it does suck, but there is light at the end of the tunnel....for now at least...

My mom and I haven't had the most solid relationship. While we have "made it work" for as long as we could, we had a huge fight where I fnd it completely appropriate to say that the "sh*t hit the fan"....pardon my French. Our fight was, as usual, started by something completely irrelevent and led to her and I almost physically fighting, and me leaving my house in tears. Now, I want you to understand friends, that I do love my mom, but I have come to the realization that in order for us to have a decent relationship, I must move out of the house. So I did.  Luckily, I was able to stay at the boyfriends house for a couple days, but my dear sweet friend Marina, invited me to stay at her house where she has an extra room.

Had this fight happened in the past, I may have thought that all I needed was a couple of days to clear my head and I would be back home, but for some strange reason, I knew that this was my one chance to leave before things truly got worse. Unfortunately, for my mom, this wasn't the best time for me to leave I'm sure, as she just recieved the news that she has basil-cell carcinoma, or skin cancer, on the right side of her nose.

I'm the type of person that believes that I must be there for everyone else in my life before myself, and if I'm not I feel an unwavering sense of guilt. However, I have been trying to keep this feeling buried deep inside for far too long, and during our fight I let it exlpode out of me, and it felt really good to release it.

Moral of the story, letting go of feelings you have deep inside of you is a good thing, even though it doesnt seem so good at the time.

I am a work in progress.

I'm in an Etsy Treasury!

I still havent been able to figure out quite how Etsy does what they do SO WELL. I mean, here we are, shop owners, creators, and artisits, helping promote each other! In any other place it doesnt make any sense. But at Etsy, it makes perfect sense. We are all a big community of friends, supporters, and cheerleaders of others, and that is OKAY by me!

Check out the beautiful treasury that my friend Jen at Polestar created. Very simply, one of the prettiest Treasuries Ive seen in a while. And lucky for me, my adorable little goldenrod jar made the cut!

Please let Jen know how pretty the treasury is!

Isnt she adorable? I told you! And she's only $15.00 at Vintage Fix :)

Passing a little Sweepstakes your way :)

Hey Guys!

If you havent seen this website than you have been missing out! I have been shopping here for a while, and still cant get enough of their great sales! They offer everything from women's, men's, and children's clothing along with beautiful home-decor. And I'm not talking about random brands but top, expensive brands at up to 75% off their retail value. It drives me crazy! Anywho, I wanted to share this with you guys before the sweepstakes ends on January 23rd. All you have to do is get your friends to register with Hautelook between now and January 23rd and you will be entered in the drawing. How awesome is that? I know, I know. You can thank me later...

Meet ChristineMarieDesigns!

So I held a little contest in the etsy forums asking all those fabulous etsy designers and sellers to show me there shops. Usually I will spend hours looking, I mean drooling, over some amazing shops I've discovered on my own. Which is why I decided to do this, it's so much easier dont ya think?

Anywho, ChristineMarieDesigns really impressed me! Her jewelry is a great mix of vintage appeal mixed with modern flare. I couldn't resist!

Here's a small interview in my "Meet The Seller" series:

                                                      --------------------------------

Question 1: What inspires you to create your jewelry?

I create jewelry I would wear myself. I am a graphic designer (for my day job) and while it is creative, I find I really enjoy working with my hands. Usually I like a part of this and a part of that, and how would this look with that? I am most inspired in the evening – I think things get quieter around here and I will just start in. Some of my friends and I have what we call “crafty playdates”. We get together and eat too much and create. We learn new techniques, some unrelated to jewelry. These always get the creative juices flowing for me. I want to come home and organize my space or start creating.

Question 2:What is the jewelry making process like?

I usually start with an idea in my head. Shop for said idea, usually on etsy for really unique items and in the local bead store for findings. Browsing etsy or looking in the bead store will trigger 5 new ideas. Often, the idea in my head turns out completely different when I sit down to work. I would say it is a moving target. There are many steps to creating, say, an artisan earring. I think about the bead/silver combo, what the earwire should look like – long or short, hammered? What is the overall finish – rustic? Oxidized flat? Polished for a luster? Earwires, after all, are half the design. I often make a set for myself and test new things – I want to make sure they don’t flip and get stuck or become something that a buyer constantly has to adjust.

Question 3:What's your favorite thing to do while you’re not creating jewelry?

I have a husband, 2 young kids, 3 dogs, 1 cat and 1 gecko. When I am not creating jewelry, you can find me spending time with my family or walking dogs. I’ve recently discovered an interest in cooking from scratch. I enjoy spending time with my mom and sisters and my crafty friends.

                                                        ---------------------------------

Thanks for the wonderful interview Christine! We look forward to seeing more beautiful jewelry from you!

Sneak Peek!

I am already getting some fresh vintage up at Vintage Fix, but I wanted to give you guys a heads up of what's to come

vintage pearls

vintage pink purse

vintage lunch pail

They will be up shortly, so keep checking back :)

Antique shops are my favorite!

So yesterday was a success!

With the boyfriend in tow, we traveled about 45 minutes away from our humble abode to visit some A-M-A-Z-I-N-G antique shops. And when I say amazing, I mean we didnt just walk into one room full of untapped goodies to be discovered, but rooms on top of rooms, on top of rooms, with hundreds of nooks and crannies! I was in heaven. And did what I do best. Found some adorable little things soon to be on display in Vintage Fix.

I love what I do.....

Oh, and the sewing desk is sitting comfortably in my room, and she's already been hard at work, doing what she does best :)

----------------------------------------

Question of the day:
If you have a sewing machine, what did you name her? Mine needs a name......

1.04.2010

New year, new ideas!

2. I also plan on picking up my new, well vintage, sewing machine desk I purchased over the weekend, and I will definitely be playing around with it (pics to follow!) Its adorable and I will be working on some very big projects with it.....can someone say, new handmade shop perhaps?

I'm excited to see what the new year brings Vintage Fix, as well as my imagination.....

What are your plans for the new year?
